Item Description
A rare and well-preserved pair of French rush stools, attributed to Charlotte Perriand, corresponding to the celebrated “Bauche” model n°17 developed from the late 1930s.
Each stool features a hand-woven rush (paille) seat and a solid softwood frame with gently tapered legs, subtly faceted stretchers, and characteristic domed leg caps. The proportions, construction, and materials are consistent with early Bauche workshop production, reflecting Perriand’s engagement with vernacular Alpine furniture and her pursuit of an honest, functional modernism rooted in rural craft traditions.
The stools retain their original patina with visible signs of age and use, enhancing their sculptural presence and authenticity. Offered as a matching pair, they are particularly desirable, pairs being increasingly difficult to source.
Comparable examples are documented in Jacques Barsac, Charlotte Perriand: Complete Works, and have appeared in important sales at Artcurial and Piasa.
An elegant and highly usable example of French modernist design, equally suited to a private collection or a refined interior.
France, circa 1940–1950
