Item Description
A charming small occasional table in the manner of Mathieu Matégot, France, mid-20th century. A little flat disc of lacquered steel, in the warm vermilion red so characteristic of Matégot’s work, is cantilevered from a single continuous iron rod that springs out to an open floor stance. Both the plate-top-on-bent-rod construction and the colour are drawn directly from Matégot’s table vocabulary.
The top is pierced with a bold off-centre circle and a descending arc of five graduated holes — an abstract geometric composition that gives this diminutive piece a presence well beyond its size, and throws a fine shadow in low light.
Its small footprint makes it useful as a drinks or side table pulled up to a chair, a plant or lamp stand, or simply a sculptural accent in a corner. The flat-plate form, sprung cantilever support and palette of colour align closely with Matégot; the cut-out design, however, falls outside his documented catalogue, so it is offered in the manner of the designer rather than firmly attributed. Solid and original throughout, retaining its original paint with honest wear. A confident, unrepeatable little object.
