Item Description
Mid-Century French oil on canvas painting of a seated ballerina by César Vilot. Circa 1950.
A graceful Post-Impressionist portrait of a ballerina by the French painter César Vilot, one of the noted representatives of the School of Paris. Captured in a classical seated ballet pose, the dancer is shown low to the ground with one leg elegantly extended and both arms softly rounded in a flowing port-de-bras movement. Vilot masterfully conveys the poise and delicacy of the female form through fluid brushwork and a muted, atmospheric palette. Known for his sensitive depictions of nudes and dancers.
Vilot possessed a remarkable intuition for portraying movement and femininity. His ballerinas, in particular, remain among his most celebrated subjects, embodying both strength and ethereal grace. Here, the artist’s loose yet confident handling of paint lends the composition an immediacy and softness characteristic of mid-century French post-Impressionism.
Presented in a carved and painted Montparnasse wooden frame of the period
