Item Description

A wonderfully atmospheric near pair of 19th Century French mirrors set within simple, hand-worked pine frames of pleasing proportion.

The frames retain a beautifully dry, timeworn surface with a softly developed patina, the grain of the timber and gentle irregularities revealing their honest, utilitarian craftsmanship. The mirror plates are richly foxed, the original silvering having oxidised over time to produce dramatic and organic mottling across the glass. These natural patterns lend the surfaces an almost painterly quality, softly diffusing reflection and giving the mirrors the character of decorative panels as much as functional objects. Although not perfectly identical, the two mirrors sit together extremely well as a near pair, their subtle variations adding to their authenticity and charm. The frames display the expected signs of age, including historic knocks, minor losses and small repairs, all entirely consistent with their period and contributing to their rustic elegance.

Quietly sculptural and full of character, these mirrors would bring texture, depth and atmosphere to both traditional and contemporary interiors. Honest age-related wear throughout, with minor historic repairs and losses to the frames. Mirror plates heavily foxed but stable and highly decorative.

Dimensions: 74.5/75.5cm h x 61/64cm w x 6/6cm d
