Item Description
A Handsome Small 18th-Century Georgian Oak Housekeeper’s Cupboard
A fine quality late 18th-century George III period English oak housekeeper’s cupboard of small, elegant proportions yet offering excellent storage.
The upper section is surmounted by a bold architectural broken-arch pediment with a central wooden finial above an attractive openwork circular interlaced motif, giving the piece great presence and decorative appeal. The cupboard door opens to reveal a fixed shelf inside, with a long drawer beneath. The door retains its original brass fretwork escutcheon, working lock and key, and the whole is constructed in the traditional manner with pegged joints.
The lower section comprises three graduated drawers, all retaining their original carved brass plate handles and escutcheons. The cupboard has its original oak top, inset side panels and backboards, made from good wide planks, and stands on its original Georgian bracket feet. It dismantles into two sections, making it easy to transport and to install in the home.
Displaying a beautiful rich brown oak colour and pleasing patina, this cupboard is both highly decorative and very practical. English, circa 1770, it would work equally well in a period interior or as a striking, characterful contrast in a more contemporary setting. Ideal for a kitchen, pantry, dining room, bedroom or hallway, it offers generous storage combined with real country house charm and integrity.
