Item Description
A Handsome Pair of 18th-Century George III Oak Side Chairs, Circa 1780
A fine and well proportioned pair of George III period oak side chairs in the Chippendale manner, dating from the late 18th century. Each chair features a shaped top rail centred with a carved crest, above an elegant openwork splat of scrolling and interlaced design. The drop-in seat is raised on cabriole front legs with pad feet, united by a deep, straight apron, giving the chairs a confident, balanced stance.
Of particular note is the traditional pegged construction: the frames are assembled with mortise-and-tenon joints secured by oak pegs, exactly as one would expect from good Georgian craftsmanship. The oak has acquired a rich, warm and mellow patina over more than two centuries of careful use and polishing, lending real depth, softness and character to the surface. Professionally cleaned and waxed in our workshops, these chairs are now in excellent colour and condition, solid, stable and ready for immediate use. The chair seat height is 43cm.
Made in England circa 1780, this is a highly decorative yet practical pair of early country house chairs. Equally at home in a period Georgian interior or as a striking highlight in a more contemporary scheme, they offer charm, presence and quality, a very desirable pair for the collector and decorator alike.
