Item Description

Pair of 19th-Century Victorian Oak Gothic Revival Armchairs
*Attributed to James Schoolbred & Co – English, circa 1860*

A beautifully proportioned pair of Victorian oak Gothic Revival open armchairs, very much in the manner of James Schoolbred & Co, combining striking architectural detail with country house comfort and charm.
Each chair is constructed in solid oak with chamfered edges, the frames displaying a rich grain, warm colour, and a mellow, well aged patina. The deep, square padded backs, with generously padded armrests are supported on elegant, tapering fluted uprights. A sprung, stuff over seat provides excellent comfort and depth, making these chairs ideal for reading or relaxed seating.
The front legs are of classic Gothic form, with finely carved trefoil Gothic tracery brackets and fluted, turned legs joined by an H-stretcher. The chairs stand on their original brass castors, a further mark of quality.
In wonderful original condition, the frames have been fully restored and repolished, and still retain the original horsehair upholstery beneath the current coverings. They are ready to be reupholstered in a fabric of your choice, offering the opportunity to tailor them perfectly to your interior. Seat height is a comfortable 40 cm.
Highly decorative yet robust and functional, this handsome pair would sit beautifully in a hallway, library, sitting room, or study, where they will offer both comfort and strong visual impact. A very high quality pair of English country house armchairs with deep seats, high backs, and timeless Gothic Revival character, equally at home in a traditional or a more contemporary setting.
