Item Description
A charming antique 19th Century marble sculpture depicting a young girl standing and leaning against a column, with her hands touching a draped cloth and holding a theatrical tragedy mask in her right hand.
She stands with her bare feet together, a small ball leant against the column. She is wearing a very loose dress, off the shoulders and leaning forwards with a hint of a smile on her face. Her hair is wavy and shoulder length.
This beguiling piece was created by English sculptor G Halse (1826-1895) and was typical of the time when they liked nostalgic, romantic figures that depicted the Greco-Roman look of classical beauty and this piece certainly makes a nod to that. Does the addition of the theatrical mask infer she was part of a role-play, possibly. Also, Halse besides being an artist, was a novelist and poet and clearly had many artistic endeavours which I'm sure must have influenced his creations.
This item has lived outside for part of it's life, adding some lovely naturally weathered patina. The only damage we can see is historic and to a couple of the fingers clutching the mask which does not detract.
