Item Description

An early English walnut boarded writing box
With chip carving extending over the top and to all four sides. The lid opens on a very fine pair of brass strap work hinges to an interior with divisions for writing implements, inkwell and sander. Inscribed to the base 'Charles Bawden July 27 1745'.
English, circa 1660-1745

These boxes are frequently dated to the mid 17th century; however this one is inscribed to the base, 'Charles Bawden July 27 1745' one is kept wondering about the relevance of the day and the date and if it is contemporary or added at a later date.   Bawden being a Celtic name that is often associated with Cornwall.
