Item Description
This straw marquetry table lamp illustrates all the refinement of mid-20th-century French craftsmanship. The structure, with its crisp geometric lines, is entirely covered with carefully composed straw marquetry, where each tiny strip has been flattened, dyed and assembled by hand to form subtle patterns. The result is an object that is at once precious, luminous and remarkably warm. Straw marquetry, an ancestral technique reintroduced into French furniture during the 1920s and 30s by decorators such as André Groult and Jean-Michel Frank, experienced a renaissance in the 1950s thanks to virtuoso craftsmen such as Jean Royère or Lison de Caunes. Each stem of rye is individually polished before being applied to the surface, creating the silky sheen so characteristic of this technique and the source of its real magic. This French production from the 1950s bears witness to an era when luxury was defined by the quality of the gesture, the nobility of humble materials and the patience of execution. The geometric patterns composed by the craftsman reveal themselves throughout the day as the light changes, giving the lamp a fascinatingly shifting appearance. The straw, ennobled by time, has developed a golden patina of great beauty. This lamp will find its place on a console, a chest of drawers, an end table or a desk. It pairs particularly well with modernist or Art Deco-leaning furniture, but it can also bring a precious and warm note to a contemporary interior. A true designer piece, to be celebrated as such.
