Item Description

Galloping Horse — Bronze Sculpture by Enzo Plazzotta (1921–1981), Edition 6 of 9
Mid-20th Century Bronze | British Modern Sculpture | Equestrian Art
Description
A powerful and highly collectible bronze sculpture titled Galloping Horse by Enzo Plazzotta. This limited edition cast (6/9) captures the dynamic energy of a horse in full gallop, frozen at the suspension phase where all four hooves leave the ground.
The composition conveys forward momentum and controlled power, with the horse’s elongated form and driving posture creating a strong sense of movement. Plazzotta’s ability to translate motion into solid bronze makes this an exceptional example of 20th-century equestrian sculpture.

Mounted on an oval bronze base with a black slate plinth, the piece has both presence and balance, suitable for a range of interiors.

The Artist
Enzo Plazzotta was an Italian-born sculptor who established his career in Britain, becoming one of the most respected sculptors of the 20th century.
Trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, he moved to London after the Second World War and became known for his expressive animal sculptures and major public commissions.

His work is held in leading institutions including:

Victoria and Albert Museum
National Portrait Gallery
Plazzotta was also a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, reflecting his established reputation in British art.
Form & Composition
This sculpture demonstrates Plazzotta’s mastery of movement and anatomical form:
Extended forelegs project forward, reinforcing motion
Hindquarters compress, suggesting stored energy
Lowered head conveys focus and direction
Balanced composition creates tension between movement and stability
The textured bronze surface enhances light and shadow across the form, strengthening the impression of motion. The sculpture appears almost airborne, anchored by a minimal base that does not detract from the sense of speed.
Medium & Casting
Medium: Solid bronze
Foundry: Meridian Bronze, London (stamped MB)
Signed: Plazzotta (cast signature)

The substantial weight and quality of casting confirm this as a serious collector’s piece rather than a decorative reproduction. The rich dark patina adds depth and warmth to the surface.
