Item Description
John Bentham-Dinsdale (1927–2008)
The America's Cup, 1881 – Mischief & Atalanta
Marine Oil on Canvas
A striking and highly decorative marine oil painting by the renowned British maritime artist John Bentham-Dinsdale, depicting the celebrated America's Cup race of 1881.
This impressive composition captures the American defender Mischief leading the Canadian challenger Atalanta as the race unfolds across lively coastal waters. Surrounding the competing yachts is an animated flotilla of steam vessels, excursion boats, and spectator craft, creating a wonderfully atmospheric scene full of movement, colour, and period charm.
Bentham-Dinsdale was widely admired for his ability to combine historical accuracy with strong decorative appeal. Here, the elegant racing yachts are beautifully rendered beneath towering cream sails, their dark hulls contrasting against shimmering blue-grey waters and an expansive sky. The result is a painting that draws the eye immediately and displays beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The artist's architectural background is evident in the precision of the yacht rigging and construction, while his confident handling of light and atmosphere creates a convincing sense of distance and maritime drama.
An especially desirable feature is the extensive handwritten inscription on the reverse by the artist, recording historical details relating to the race and the yachts themselves. Such inscriptions are highly characteristic of Bentham-Dinsdale's work and add greatly to its authenticity and collector appeal.
Presented in an attractive swept gilt frame which complements the maritime subject perfectly.
