Item Description
ADRIAN HEATH (c.1965) – “Form in Motion”
Signed Original Watercolour by Acclaimed British Abstract Artist
An exceptional mid-century abstract watercolour by Adrian Heath (1920–1992)—a leading figure in post-war British modernism. Dated 1965 and signed lower right, Form in Motion embodies Heath’s refined approach to abstraction, combining compositional clarity with expressive energy.
ARTIST & CONTEXT:
Adrian Heath was a central figure in the evolution of British abstract art. Educated at the Slade School of Fine Art, Heath’s work was informed by Constructivism and European abstraction, yet always retained a distinctly British lyricism. He exhibited regularly at the Redfern Gallery, participated in Documenta II (1959) and This is Tomorrow (1956), and his work is held in major UK public collections including the Tate.
THE WORK:
Title: Form in Motion
Date: Circa 1965
Medium: Watercolour on paper
Signed: “Heath ’65”, lower right
A striking interplay of vertical and diagonal forms creates an animated sense of movement. Heath’s mature palette blends:
Earthy ochres and siennas for warmth
Cool blues and greys for contrast
Deep charcoal for weight
Soft ivories that lift the composition
The use of transparent washes and gestural strokes gives the work rhythm and depth, while the architectural arrangement of forms evokes motion and tension—perfectly balancing structure and spontaneity.
PRESENTATION:
Professionally framed in a clean-lined, natural wood frame with float mount to highlight the composition. The piece is ready to hang and works beautifully in both modernist and eclectic interiors.
Framed Dimensions: 38.5 cm H × 37 cm W × 2 cm D
