Item Description

Pair of Antique Chinese Bronze Signal Cannons on Cast Iron Dragon Carriages, c.1890 – Decorative Collectors Display Pieces
A rare matched pair of antique Chinese bronze signal cannons, dating to the late Victorian period (circa 1890), presented on superb cast iron dragon carriages. Bold, sculptural and highly decorative, these museum-quality display pieces blend militaria and maritime style with striking mythological detail—ideal as statement objects for an interior, library, office, or collector’s cabinet.
Description
This exceptional pair of ornamental signal cannons was made for ceremonial or decorative use rather than field service, most likely intended for a prestigious setting such as a naval interior, officer’s quarters, colonial residence, club, or institutional display.
Each cannon features a solid bronze barrel with classic artillery proportions, including a flared muzzle and multiple reinforcing rings. The bronze has matured to a warm, authentic patina with light verdigris in places, adding character and depth without detracting from the integrity of the metal.
The real focal point is the pair of cast iron dragon carriages—dramatic and finely modelled, with detailed musculature and scaled skin, expressive heads with open jaws, and sweeping tails that form elegant supports. The discreetly integrated wheels complete the “carriage” silhouette, combining engineering with decorative appeal. The design reflects the late 19th century’s fascination with Chinese and Eastern-inspired motifs, giving the set an exotic, ceremonial presence.
