Item Description
Late Qing Chinese Porcelain Scholar’s Cube Seal Block with Horses
19th Century Hand-Painted Porcelain Cube with Auspicious Calligraphy
An exceptional late 19th century Chinese porcelain scholar’s seal block of rare cube form, finely hand-painted with equestrian scenes and auspicious calligraphic inscriptions.
Originating from China and dating to the Late Qing period, this compact yet visually striking object combines symbolic imagery, poetic inscription, and traditional seal-script carving — a refined decorative work with strong cultural narrative.
Description
Of square form, each side decorated with spirited horses rendered in iron-red tones with subtle grey shading. The painting is confident and expressive, with careful attention to musculature and movement.
The top panel bears the auspicious idiom:
“Ma Dao Cheng Gong” (马到成功)
Translated as: “Success arrives with the horse.”
A long-standing Chinese blessing associated with achievement, advancement, and prosperity, particularly meaningful in business and scholarly pursuits.
Surrounding the top inscription is a traditional green key-fret (leiwen) border symbolising continuity and enduring good fortune.
The sides include the characters “Yuzhi” (御制) meaning “Made by Imperial Order,” an honorific inscription frequently found on refined decorative wares of the period.
Poetic Inscription
One face features a vertical poetic text which translates approximately as:
“The painting extends a thousand miles,
Its colours harmonise beautifully,
Admired both at home and abroad,
As precious as the jade of Jiangdu.”
This literati-style verse praises artistic refinement and balanced colour harmony while comparing the work to fine jade — long regarded as the noblest material in Chinese culture.
The inclusion of such calligraphy aligns the piece with the scholar’s studio tradition, where objects were appreciated not only for craftsmanship but for intellectual and symbolic meaning.
Base Mark
The underside carries an archaistic four-character seal-script mark carved in traditional format. The seal is decorative in nature and reflects classical Chinese seal aesthetics rather than a later printed factory mark.
Visible age wear and natural patination to the base are consistent with 19th century manufacture.
