Introduction

A highly decorative and atmospheric nineteenth-century Scottish mountain landscape by **William Beattie-Brown R.S.A.**, depicting the celebrated scenery of Sgùrr nan Gillean and the northern Cuillin on the Isle of Skye.

The work combines impressive interior presence with strong documentary interest. Its lower-left **W. Beattie-Brown A.R.S.A.** signature assists in establishing a probable 1871–1884 date, while the reverse retains an historic Anthony Woodd Gallery Ltd., Edinburgh label with stock number **B2881**.

Presented within an elaborate later gilt frame measuring approximately 92 cm across, the painting has considerable visual presence and would work particularly effectively within a traditional drawing room, library, country house, hotel, office or layered contemporary interior.

Catalogue Note

Beattie-Brown builds the composition from the foreground upwards, giving the rocky terrain an unusually strong physical presence.

Large boulders and scattered stones are interwoven with muted Highland vegetation, establishing an earthy lower register of browns, ochres and subdued greens.

The eye then moves towards the increasingly distant Cuillin, where cooler blue-grey and slate tones establish atmospheric recession.

Above, an extensive sky filled with moving cloud dominates almost half the composition.

The alternation of darker weather and lighter passages creates the sensation of rapidly changing conditions across the mountains.

This relationship between terrain and atmosphere was central to Beattie-Brown's mature Highland landscapes and gives the painting considerably more character than a purely topographical mountain view.

Sgùrr nan Gillean and Skye

Sgùrr nan Gillean is among the most distinctive peaks of the Cuillin and forms one of the great landmarks of the Isle of Skye.

The subject identification is historically documented by the Anthony Woodd Gallery label attached to the reverse.

The composition appears compatible with views from the country around Sligachan towards the northern Cuillin.

The surrounding mountain forms belong to the broader northern Cuillin and Basteir landscape, although individual subsidiary peaks are deliberately not definitively named without additional topographical evidence.

Dating the Work

The painting carries the signature:

Beattie-Brown was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1871 and became a full Academician in 1884.

His use of the A.R.S.A. designation therefore provides persuasive evidence for a probable **1871–1884** dating.

This remains a scholarly dating rather than an absolute date of execution.

The Artist

William Beattie-Brown was born near Haddington, East Lothian, in 1831.

He trained at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder and subsequently established himself as an important Scottish landscape painter.

Highland scenery became particularly central to his career from around 1860 onwards.

His paintings are distinguished by an interest in the physical structure of the landscape together with atmospheric weather, cloud and changing light.

Beattie-Brown became A.R.S.A. in 1871 and R.S.A. in 1884 and exhibited extensively with the Royal Scottish Academy. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.

His Diploma Work, *Coire-na-Faireamh in Applecross Deer Forest, Ross-shire*, remains within the Royal Scottish Academy Diploma Collection.

Royal Scottish Academy

Beattie-Brown's relationship with the Royal Scottish Academy extended across more than half a century.

The Academy records his exhibition activity from 1852 until 1909.

His elevation from Associate to full Academician provides particularly useful chronological evidence for the present painting because its signature explicitly incorporates the earlier A.R.S.A. designation.
