An impressive Italian console table, c. late 20th century, with a beautifully weathered solid Carrara marble top resting upon a pair of sculptural composite stone Renaissance-style griffin-form supports.
The Carrara marble top displays a naturally aged surface with soft grey veining and an attractive timeworn patina. Its simple, restrained form is perfectly balanced by the richly modelled griffin supports beneath.
Each support is cast as a crouching griffin with powerful leonine features, finely detailed feathered wings and scrolling foliate ornament. Inspired by the fantastical beasts of the Italian Renaissance, they create a dramatic architectural base while remaining elegant and harmonious in proportion.
Equally suited to both interior and exterior settings, this striking console makes a wonderful focal point in an entrance hall, orangery, conservatory or garden room, while its durable materials also allow it to sit beautifully within a formal garden, courtyard or terrace.
