Item Description

Chatsworth Estate village of Edensor. Made around 1760 for a house of substance within the estate, it remained in place until removed by our restorer some fifteen years ago, and has only recently been acquired for our collection.

The cupboard is constructed in beautifully figured curl mahogany with solid mahogany, fruitwood, and satinwood details—materials of a quality associated with high-end Georgian commissions. Its rare break-front barrel form is of particular note, a design so unusual that neither we nor our restorer have encountered another example.

The provenance is impeccable. Edensor formed part of the Chatsworth Estate, the model village created under the patronage of the Dukes of Devonshire, whose collections at Chatsworth are among Britain’s most celebrated. Pieces originating from estate houses of this calibre seldom survive in such a state of preservation.

Completely original and untouched since the day it was first hung, the cupboard retains its authentic eighteenth-century surface and fittings, standingas a rare and distinguished survivor of English cabinetmaking at its finest.
