Item Description
An outstanding example of late medieval craftsmanship, this monumental English Gothic oak coffer dates to the late 15th century.
Of impressive scale and architectural presence, it would have originally served as secure storage while projecting the owners status within a domestic or ecclesiastical setting, while reflecting the value of the objects stored within.
The front is carved with bold, deeply recessed Gothic tracery, echoing the forms of cathedral architecture—pointed arches, quatrefoils, and flowing motifs executed with remarkable precision. The carving remains unusually sharp and expressive, with no loss to detail.
Built from solid English oak, the coffer features a thick two-board lid, forged iron strap hinges, and its original lock plate—all consistent with high-quality craftsmanship of the period. The surface has developed an exceptional rich, dark natural patina and colour developed over centuries, with wear entirely appropriate to its age.
Likely of English origin, this piece stands out not only for its visual impact but also for its exceptional condition and integrity. Examples of this calibre, scale, and authenticity are increasingly scarce. Indeed, this piece was held within a private collection - a Yorkshire farmhouse where it may have stood since the day it was created and delivered to its new owner.
This is a significant and rare piece to surface, and now avaliable as a wonderful addition to any serious collectors itinerary of early oak or Gothic-period furnishings.
