English Georgian Painted Pine Dresser Base From Grantley Hall, C.1760

A substantial Georgian painted pine dresser base with great history, originating from the kitchens of Grantley Hall, North Yorkshire. Created c.1760, the dresser remained in use until very recently including during the early 20th century, when it was repurposed as a workshop bench within the Estate.

Built entirely in solid pine, the dresser retains its original panelled back, shaped ends, two deep drawers and pair of cupboard doors enclosing fixed shelves. The thick plank top bears the clear marks of its working life, including the outline left by a metal clamp once fixed in place.

Perhaps the most charming feature is the replacement drawer handle. At some point during its life in the estate workshops, one original handle was removed and replaced with a simple nut and bolt, a practical repair made by the craftsmen who continued to use it. Rather than diminishing the piece, it forms part of its story and reflects the honest, working nature of the dresser.

The surface retains remarkable layers of original paint, worn back through generations of use to reveal a wonderfully textured patina. Scratches, knocks and abrasions accumulated over more than two centuries have left an appearance that simply cannot be reproduced.

The dresser remains exceptionally solid and heavy, with no movement in the frame, and survives in remarkably original condition throughout. Increasingly difficult to find, it is equally at home as a kitchen dresser base, island, console or sideboard, bringing genuine country house character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
