Item Description
A fine and sculptural 19th-century English sundial, hand-carved from Portland limestone, c.1850. Formed in three sections and raised upon a boldly proportioned egg-and-dart plinth, the column is enriched on all four sides with finely worked floral and fruiting swags. The upper section is crowned with Fleur-de-lis armorial shields, framing the bronze dial plate.
Quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, Portland stone is a Jurassic oolitic limestone, renowned for its durability and distinctive pale grey tone. Its enduring qualities have long made it the material of choice for major British landmarks, including St Paul’s Cathedral and the British Museum.
With its classical ornament and time-weathered surface, this rare sundial embodies both refinement and presence. A striking architectural feature, it offers an elegant focal point for garden, terrace, or landscape setting.
