Item Description
A exceptional pair of carved walnut lion furniture bearers, Italian Baroque, 17th century (c. 1650–1700).
Boldly modelled as recumbent guardian lions, each figure is carved with a richly undercut, scrolling mane, heavy-lidded eyes and an expressive muzzle, creating dramatic depth and shadow in true Baroque fashion.
The pair retain their substantial stepped mounting blocks / tenons to the reverse, clear evidence of their original purpose as structural bearers or terminals beneath an important piece of furniture — most likely a cassone or related chest/bench form.
The walnut has matured to a deep, mellow tone with a wonderfully time-softened surface with remnants of polychrome.
With historic wear consummate with age.
