Item Description
A monumental carved and painted wooden crucifix, probably dating to the 19th century and following the Spanish colonial tradition.
The elongated figure of Christ is carved with pronounced ribs, outstretched arms and a slightly inclined head beneath a crown of thorns. The pale painted surface is detailed with red wounds and flowing blood. A substantial loincloth falls in broad, overlapping folds from a projecting knot at the right hip, above the closely aligned legs and overlapping feet.
The cross is particularly distinctive. Its rounded, branch-like timbers are carved with winding foliage and flowers, picked out in green and red against a dark ground. Large pomegranate-form terminals complete the composition, with further foliate carving continuing across the reverse.
Related carved crosses occur in Mexican devotional sculpture, while the figure also shares features with Hispano-Philippine examples. Its precise place of manufacture remains unconfirmed.
At 243 cm high, this is a substantial devotional sculpture with a strong architectural presence.
