Item Description
A remarkable pair of English red sandstone architectural urns dating to the Stuart period, probably from Cheshire or the surrounding region.
Each is hand carved with a broad, shallow bowl, naïve foliate detailing around the rim and tapering panelled sides, the recessed panels enriched with hand-drilled and punched decoration. The irregularity of the carving and visible tooling give them a particularly beautiful vernacular quality.
These were almost certainly conceived as architectural status objects rather than practical planters, perhaps originally flanking the entrance, drive or courtyard of a small manor house or country estate.
Their appeal lies in their early, sculptural character and the individuality of the carving. They would work equally well outdoors in an architectural setting or indoors as extraordinary sculptural objects.
