Item Description
Large portrait of Pope Pius XI in oil on canvas. Measuring 39" x 54". Three quarter length portrait of Pius seated and dressed in his white papal robes. With a large green and gold crucifix on a gold chain around his neck and a book in his right hand. Posed against a red curtain and with a figure of Christ on the cross beside him. Indistinctly signed and dated on the left hand side. With some repaired damage to the canvas, all away from the face. Presented unframed on the original stretcher.
Pius XI (1792 - 1878) holds the distinction of being the longest serving Pope in the history of the Church, lasting from 1846 to 1878.
