Item Description

Impressively proportioned landscape painting in oil on board by the acclaimed Scottish artist Ernest Burnett Hood (1932 -1988). Measuring 62" x 45½" without the frame. A view of farmland in the Blane valley in Stirlingshire North of Glasgow, with the Campsie fells in the background and the distinctive shape of Dumgoyne Hill on the horizon. A mid summer scene below hazy blue sky with the trees in full leaf, cow parsley and poppies flowering and the hay cut and stacked into domed hayricks in the field. Clearly signed in the lower left hand corner. Exhibition label at the rear for The Ernest Hood Retrospective Exhibition (in association with the famous Glasgow gallery of Barclay Lennie), 12th-24th January 1990, Catalogue number 65. Pale mark in the sky toward the upper right hand corner of the painting and a little piece of damage to the board at the extreme lower left hand corner. Otherwise very good condition. Presented as found, ready to hang, in a moulded and gilded wooden frame.
Born in Edinburgh, Ernest Hood was both a student and a staff member at the Glasgow School of Art before becoming a full time artist. His work was included 10 times in exhibitions at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1956 -1972. Best known for scenes in and around Glasgow, he was a member of the Glasgow Art Club. The city's Kelvingrove Art Gallery holds several of his paintings in their collection.
