Item Description

Delightful early 17th.c oak six plank chest c.1600. One of the earliest forms of joined furniture, simply constructed from six oak boards held together with handmade nails. Could be used as a box seat with storage. Lovely primitive carved decoration to the front featuring naive lunettes and diamonds plus turned roundels (note the compass point at the centre of each), stamped stars and a chip carved edges. Fitted inside with small lidded compartment to the right hand side, the lid of which forms a stay for the chest lid. Note how a simple hinge is formed for the compartment lid by the sides being shaped into a dowel which extends into the sides of the chest, in fact protruding through at the front. Iron lock plate and later antique iron hinges to the main lid. Simple triangular cuts at the sides to form the feet of the chest. Previous repairs to the lid and to both sides. Generally excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
