Item Description

The beautiful carved pink siena scagliola marble column or plinth, the cylindrical body with a lipped pedestal top, the whole with greys and yellow viens amidst and surviving from the last quarter of the nineteenth century and Grand Tour Italy.

The column is very heavy indeed being solid marble and therefore could be used for any form of sculpture. There are some losses to the rim at the base as photographed and a historic loss to the top rim. There is a historic repair to one end as photographed and very old chips to the top rim. It could be used other side up if so desired.

This type of column would be best utilised for busts, urns and statuary, being particularly suited to neoclassical pieces, and metallic or stoneware items. Used extensively in the Grand Tour period this type of column is an absolute classic.

A fine must have staple for any country house interior worth its salt.
