Item Description
The very pretty early Victorian period sand yellow painted pine bedside commode or nightstand with line decoration in burgundy, the whole to simulate birds eye maple, the lidded top opening to reveal the vacant bowl space to well-turned and line decorated peg legs, the whole now for use as a bedside or lamp table, and surviving from the second quarter of nineteenth century England.
The piece retains a pleasing dry surface with an honest scatter of knocks, scuffs, and wear commensurate with its years of use. The piece exudes a gentle provincial elegance, its small scale lending itself to a variety of intimate settings — from bedside companion to hallway accent — where its warm, time-softened hues may be best admired.
A piece that wears its history not as burden, but as charm, waiting patiently for its next chapter.
