Item Description
A Georgian brass-bound mahogany cellaret of octagonal form, the hinged lid with a central figured panel framed by a crossbanded border, opening to an original lead-lined interior with radial bottle slots, flanked by heavy brass carry handles and set on a matching lower cupboard with a single door enclosing a two-tier interior.
The lift-off chest construction, designed to allow servants to carry the ice-laden cellaret independently of the base, is a hallmark of high-grade 18th-century entertaining furniture. Its compact octagonal footprint and substantial vertical presence make it an exceptional anchor piece for a dining room alcove or positioned beside a library armchair where its crossbanded top can also function as an elevated drinks table.
Very good antique condition with some surface wear and a mellowed patination consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1790.
