Item Description
A late 19th century ebonised low salon chair, the arched cresting rail set over a pictorial tapestry back panel flanked by ornately carved turned uprights with parcel-gilt Corinthian capitals above a spindle gallery, set over a broad upholstered seat above matching turned spindle aprons, all raised on carved turned front legs with original brass and ceramic castors.
Embodying the High Aesthetic Movement’s fascination with Moorish form, its low-slung, architectural profile draws directly from the Anglo-Eastern revivalist influences championed by London’s art circles in the late 1870s, with an extraordinary density of detail, pairing spiral turnings and spindle galleries with applied brass beadwork, collared rings and cable-twist trims that catch the light against the ebonised timber.
Very good antique condition with some surface wear to the ebonised and gilt surfaces consistent with age. Upholstery is clean and in good order. Structurally sound and ready to place.
English, circa 1880.
