Item Description
Circa 1870. A mid Victorian profusely carved triple back oak monk’s bench, the Flemish bench with moulded top rail with a pair of carved busts at each end, the back with three carved panels depicting different scenes with foliate carving, above and below, the two shaped arms with lion mask facing with ring pull and piercing on the sides, the large hinged seat with carved fore-edge opens to an uninterrupted interior, the base with a pair of panels, each with lion masks and foliate carving on the sides, flanked by a pair of carved pilasters, the frieze is profusely carved, all resting on carved feet.
