Item Description
Circa 1880. A classic pair of bentwood chairs by 'Thonet'. With a double loop back in stained bent beech, the circular embossed seat with a large scallop shell, simple rail resting on four turned legs, slightly out swept towards the base and with all of the legs braced by a concentric bentwood
stretcher. (Michael Thonet (1796 - 1871) was born in Boppard am Rhein, Germany, and trained as a traditional cabinet maker. In the 1830s, as an alternative to the laborious technique of carving, he began bending wood to create furniture) Source V & A Museum, London.
