Item Description
'Horse and Rider' oil on canvas painting by Halima Nalecz (1914 - 2008). Signed Verso, 1953.
An abstract, figurative work in an exquisite palette. Nalecz saw colour as medicine, which is exemplified by this work with its green and blue toes gently interrupted by a sphere of yellow and a thin line of flame red. Presented within a hand-painted wooden triple-frame.
Halima Nalecz was born Halima Maria Krzywicz-Nowohonska in 1914 in Poland, and spent the majority of her youth as a political refugee, moving around Eastern Europe and the Middle East until she arrived in England in 1947.
As a co-founder of the New Vision Gallery in London in 1956, and later her own Drian Gallery in Portland Place, she forged a unique path through the London art scene and worked for more than 40 years as a promoter of new and emerging artists. She helped to launch many important careers, as well as being an accomplished artist herself.
Her work evolved from abstract to figurative, in a style instantly recognisable and clearly pointing to her Eastern European roots. She painted spontaneously with a natural rhythm, executed rapidly, as though in flight from the real world.
