Item Description
This incredibly handsome (matched?) pair of serpentine candlesticks are English and from the late 19th century. They have nicely detailed turning to the sconces and bases and each have some lovely patterns / colour ways to their respective stone.
Although the details of the bases and the sconces match, there is a slight (6mm) height difference between the two and obviously the different colours ... Perhaps there were a pair of each colour way and this is one of each pair? Or more simply there may have just been some variations in their making... Regardless you only notice when placed directly besides one another - at either end of a table, mantlepiece etc you'd never know...
Both candlesticks have encountered some knocks over their years; the red one has some nibbles and a larger chunk missing from the sconce (pictured). The green one has had a harder life still with more nibbles and a bigger chunk missing from the sconce, which itself seems to have been glued back together at some point as does the main stem of this candlestick (all pictured). There is a slight looseness to their joints but nothing that impacts use. This all said they display very very well with the damages only noticeable under close inspection and good (not candle) light... It also means that these two can be bought for less than a third of the asking price of other comparable examples...
The green candlestick measures 40cm high and has a base diameter of 15cm. The red candlestick measures 39.4cm high and has a base diameter of 15.5cm
