Item Description

This early 20th century Steam Lab educational model / teaching aid by G. Cussons Ltd - The Technical Works - Manchester, is a gorgeous example of it's type. Far more charmingly 'hand-made' than the comparatively mass produced plywood, plaster and acrylic models that were produced in subsequent decades, this piece is manufactured in solid wood and meticulously hand painted. It has a wonderful aesthetic that encapsulate's all that developed in the previous century with Britain's Industrial Revolution.

Cussons specialised in the development and manufacturing of teaching and research equipment for mechanical engineering students. This model is of absolutely fantastic quality; made of solid wood with the upper section sliding from side to side, demonstrating the opening and closing part of some part of this steam powered machine.
It's been painted in red and a teal-y blue with hand painted lettering and arrows - the painted surface has darkened with time (the Steam Lab was probably as sooty and smokey as you'd imagine) though you get an idea of the original colour way when the upper section is slid to it's extremities.

A working piece; it evidences it's years of use; there are plenty of knocks, scuffs and scratches but nothing that impacts the looks or functionality of the piece. It's solid, sturdy and displays very well.

It measures 81.5cm wide x 37cm high x 31cm deep.
