Item Description
This is an antique figural woodblock print. A Japanese, framed late-Meiji period picture after Yamamato Shōun, dating to the Edwardian period, circa 1910.Regarded as a bridge artist between the Ukiyo-e and Shin-Hanga style, the late Meiji era work of Yamamato Shōun (1870 - 1965) moved to a more Western-influenced process, rather than the Edo period woodblock craft. Featuring romanticised Edo-inspired fashions rather than the contemporary Meiji clothing, his bijinga period (pictures of beautiful women) was his focus before moving to traditional brush painting known as Nihonga in the Showa period.Title: 'Reading' (Dokusho) - from the series Fashions of Today (Ima sugata)
