Item Description
A beautiful antique Art Nouveau period fruitwood three-fold screen room divider, inlaid with stylised botanical panels. French. Circa 1900.
The screen has the original patina, which has been waxed and shows a wonderful rich colour and mellow shine. The panels work on double-acting hinges, allowing each panel to bend each way.
The front panels are inlaid in boxwood and walnut. Some of the background green elements are hand painted, adding subtle depth and tonal variation to the composition. This is set against the highly figured grain of the fruitwood panels.
The tenoned frame is in a simulated rosewood with shaped pine aprons.
There has been an historic repair around one of the hinges, please refer to the photographs. The work is solid and secure. There are some marks and knocks around the screen consistent with its age, and two of the fruitwood panels show a hairline split running down them. These remain stable. Overall, the screen has a very sturdy, reassuring feel. The right hand side back panel has mellowed slightly in colour.
A beautifully balanced piece that presents very well, while being decorative and functional.
Delivery included to mainland England, Wales and southern Scotland.
