Item Description
Excellent quality late 19th Century Plum Pudding mahogany centre table with gilt metal mounts and gold leaf greek key design to the drawer and reverse frieze. French - Louis XVI revival. C1890.
The table has a chamfered cornered top and stands on tapering legs, leading to the cross stretcher with ornate centred medallion. The whole is decorated with gilt metal mounts. There is wonderful prominent gold leaf Greek Key design to the drawer and reverse apron.
Veneered in plum pudding mahogany, with a solid mahogany frame. The interior drawer is also made in solid mahogany, with dovetail construction.
Plum pudding mahogany is a rare and highly sought-after variety of mahogany wood, with distinctive swirling patterns and rich colours. It was particularly prized in the decorative arts during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, especially in French Empire period furniture and again in the revival in the late 19th century.
The table is in very good clean condition, showing some light signs of use. There are no loose joints, but due to the design it shows some very slight movement. There is no damage and all of the gilt metal mounts are intact.
A versatile table that could also be used as a hall table, or as an occasional desk.
