Item Description
Pair of Gothic Revival copper & turned wood door handles. Circa 1880.
The handles have a lovely tactile feel, made from turned fruitwood enclosed by sinuous shaped copper overlay that wraps around the surface in a stylised foliate. These are mounted on a brass collar with quatrefoil ended back plates.
Decorative and very unusual, in the original patina with minute areas of Verdigris visible in the recesses. There is a historic small screw head in the fruitwood to one handle, noticeable between the copper overlay. The only explanation we can conclude is that it was added later to prevent the copper from rotating around the wood.
Both handles swivel freely. The central back plate is 5cm in diameter.
