Item Description
Rare bentply Bambi chair designed by Han Pieck (1924 - 2010) for Morris & Co of Glasgow. Circa 1946.
This beautiful chair was made in a very limited production of only 200. Made of layers of plywood moulded in a single sheet, with birch veneer to the one side, and sapele to the other.
In 1938 Neil Morris, son of the founder of Morris & Co Furniture, becomes one of the British innovators in using laminated wood for furniture design.
Dutch furniture designer Han Pieck studied at the Applied Art School in Amsterdam, with Mart Stam as one of his teachers. He was Influenced by Gerald Summers designs. After WWII he went to the United Kingdom, where collaborated with Neil Morris to manufacture the Bambi chair.
By repute, this example has been in the same family since purchased from Morris & Co. The printed maker's mark is no longer to the underside, there has been a later hand written addition.
The chair has been sympathetically re-finished by hand, keeping as much of the authentic marks as possible to highlight its genuine heritage. There have been three small birch veneer repairs, one to the inside right hand leg, and two to the back top. Please refer to the photographs 10 and 11.
The chair is structurally sound with no damage.
Additional dimensions information:
The seats are 44cm high.
