Item Description
This heavily pleated skirt is by the Miao ethnic minority from Sichuan, SW China. The skirt dates to the first half of the C20. It is made from hemp with an indigo batik pattern to the main body of the skirt and a deep border with embroidery in yellow and orange silk and applique in black, white and red cottons. The needlework skills are exquisite and considering that there is over 4.5m of skirt, it would have taken a very long time to do. The skirt was finally pleated and it would have sashayed wonderfully as the wearer moved.
I've mounted the skirt on heavy linen over a canvas stretched frame. The pleating gives a wonderful sculptural character to the piece.
If you are proposing to hang the skirt on a wall with direct sunlight, then i recommend a Museum grade Perspex cover to protect the colours from fading. I can quote for this.
