1960’s Gordon Russell teak table and 8 chairs

Designed by Ron Carter who was a very successful independent designer in the 1960’s. He was known for his practical well thought out designs. The range is called Farncombe which Lesley Jackson says “He developed a handsome collection of dining room, living room and bedroom furniture called The Farncombe Range”. The maker, Gordon Russell were at this point making quality well made stylish furniture for domestic use in relatively small quantities as well as larger contract work for churches, offices etc.

We have a Farncombe leaflet which shows it also made in black walnut says ” All this furniture is of very high quality, both the solid timbers and the veneers having been specially selected “. The chairs are solid teak but the table top will be veneered. The table top is fixed to the base and has never been off so please check that it will fit through doorways on it’s side so you’ll need about 72cms or plenty of space behind any doors to enable it to be swivelled round narrow doors.

The design has been very well considered as the table will seat exactly 8 when extended. Due to the design and placement of the legs everyone can sit comfortably. Most 8 seat tables are larger than this one. The chairs are a generous size and unlike some chairs of this time they will take quite heavy use as they’re strongly constructed.

Most people in the 1960’s only bought 4 or 6 chairs, so it’s hard to find a set with 8 chairs particularly with carver armchairs which at the time were expensive luxuries for most people. The set would of been very expensive at the time.

Condition
The table is in very good vintage condition and looks to have been rarely used, it has a polished finish. As you’ll see in one of the photos there is a small knock to the edge of the leaf , it isn’t on the main table .The chairs had received more use and needed to be stripped and cleaned and oiled to bring them back to their best.

The carver chairs are 57.5cms wide and 44cms seat height, whereas the standard chairs are 52cms wide. We’ve re-upholstered the seats in a lovely copper coloured velvet which suits the lovely teak frames.
As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely and variations in finish.
