Item Description
Beithcraft teak sideboard on crossover legs designed by Val Rossi 1968
This lovely design was called Symphony in a 1968 advert we found in an old trade paper. Beithcraft were a lot smaller than McIntosh so their brochures are very rare unlike those by McIntosh so nobody has yet come up with a model name for this popular recognisable model. Val Rossi had worked initially at McIntosh where he produced a number of designs which today are often ascribed to Tom Robertson. Some of his designs must have been too unusual as a number of great pieces rarely come up for sale today. He moved to Beithcraft in about 1964 and designed all their pieces from then until they were taken over by McIntosh in the late 1970’s.
He also designed a matching table and chairs, and also a bureau, but these weren’t so popular at the time. Today this lovely sideboard is very sought after and makes quite a statement. All Beithcraft furniture is nicely made and wasn’t cheap. A much cheaper company called Beautility made a version of this design, but it’s nowhere near as well finished and is also shorter by 22cms.
In the 1970’s Beithcraft used a very strong polyurethane varnished finish which is difficult to remove when marked, but this one must be an earlier one as it had a more natural oiled finish which didn’t take as much work to remove and clean.
Dimensions: 205cms long, 73.5cms high and 45cms deep ( plus projecting handles )
Condition
Cleaned and oiled. There are no obvious marks or scratches. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.
