Item Description
Smart rare A Younger 8 seat dining table circa 1960
This lovely teak and rosewood veneered dining table was either a commission or made in very small numbers as we’ve never seen one before despite specialising in this high end British maker for nearly 15 years. It’s not labelled, but originally came with a matching sideboard that was as well as the superb set of Arne Vodder chairs which are shown with it in some of the photos. Not shown in the photos is a plate glass top which the original owners had made to protect it from marks and scratches.
The chairs date to 1956-1960 and the table has features used in a rarely seen bedroom range that was shown in 1960 which also used a mix of rosewood and teak veneers. It is really unusual to mix the 2 woods together and would have been really difficult to do in this way which shows off the different grains to great effect.
Designed by John Herbert who was A Youngers design director from the early 1950’s until his sudden death in 1971. A very talented designer who deserves to be better known.
The largest mid-century fixed topped dining table we’ve seen it’s designed to seat 8 chairs comfortably and looks great with the Arne Vodder set that lived with it for around 65 years.
Condition
Cleaned and oiled it comes with a protective plate glass top. No obvious marks, scratches or damage.
Notes
The top is fixed and like so many British Mid-Century tables it wasn’t designed to come apart so you will need wide enough doors. ideally around 77cms so it can be taken in on it’s side.
