Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard Nielsen teak gateleg table by France and Son. These stylish dining tables were designed sometime prior to 1960 according to the Danish Furniture Design Index. They are rarely seen in Denmark as they were aimed at the British market. Mr France was British and started with a Danish partner called Daverkosen. Mr Daverkosen left the company in around 1960 and it became France and Son. This model is sometimes seen with the FD label, but this one has the France and Son label dating it to the early 1960’s. Hvidt and Molgaard worked together designing some 250 plus items of furniture as well as being successful architects in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. They came up with many beautiful pieces which have become sought after design classics today. In this case they have turned the basic idea of a gateleg / dropleaf table into a thing of great beauty. We’ve had the table cleaned by our in-house time-served furniture restorer and its now looking fabulous with no obvious marks, scratches etc, just the very minor signs of wear that you have to expect after some 60 years if you look very closely.
