Item Description

Val Rossi McIntosh teak chest

Val Rossi was chief designer at McIntosh in the early 1960’s until he joined Beithcraft in about 1964. Tom Robertson was also at McIntosh at the time and was with them until they closed in the early 1980’s. It’s hard to discover which designs were by Rossi and which by Robertson, but a few are documented in design books of the time and trade articles. We’ve not had this lovely chest before, but we have had the matching Troon sideboard which we have found in The Cabinet Maker described as by Val Rossi so this is definitely by him. The Troon was only made for a year or two and like this chest isn’t in any of the many McIntosh catalogues we have. By 1964/5 McIntosh had stopped making bedroom furniture commercially as they were working flat out producing their very popular dining suites along with coffee tables etc.

Val Rossi is best known today for his organic sideboards that he designed at Beithcraft, but from his few known designs for McIntosh we’re sure he came up with many more stylish pieces which today are usually all attributed to Tom Robertson. Look out for a blog coming soon !

The simple lines along with the beautifully shaped handles and the quality of the manufacture is in our view equal to many Danish pieces of the time.

Condition
Cleaned and oiled. There was one small piece of teak veneer missing on a drawer front which has been replaced. If you look closely it is shown in the photos. As with all vintage furniture if you look very closely you may see some very minor signs of wear.
