Item Description

ANTIQUE VICTORIAN FOLD OUT CARD TABLE BY JAMES LAMB OF MANCHESTER (1816-1903)

A handsome, good quality and elegant folding card table of simple demi-lune form with beautiful design flourishes.

Beautifully made using the finest selected mahogany with a blind fret carved frieze finely carved in the chinoiserie taste very much in the manner on Thomas Chippendale with interlocking geometric motifs. The table is raised on tapering square legs with its original brass castors.

Converting from a demi-lune side table to a circular card table by way of a drawer from the back which can also be used to store gaming supplies, which pulls out to act as the support for the fold-over top when gaming revealing its original green beige lining.

The table is stamped on the drawer ‘Lamb, Manchester’. James Lamb was a prominent Victorian cabinet maker and upholsterer based in Manchester, England. The company was known for high-end pieces. The firm famously produced pieces for major international showcases, including the 1862 London Exhibition and the 1867 Paris Exhibition, where Lamb won medals. They were renowned for exceptional craftsmanship, incorporating Aesthetic Movement designs, rich wood grains like pollard oak or flame mahogany, and delicate parcel-gilt, ebonised details and high quality carving.

Also stamped with the number ‘18340‘ probably indicating a commissioned piece.

The table probably dates from the mid to late 19th century period. circa 1860s-1880s in date.

The table is largely in good vintage condition, all mechanisms work as they should and it is still a very usable table. There is some cosmetic wear commensurate with age throughout as you would expect from age/use.

Approximate measurements when closed: 92cm wide x 46cm deep x 76cm high.

Approximate measurements when open: 92cm diameter x 74cm high.
