Item Description
ANTIQUE FOLK ART DOG WOOLWORK
Depicting a slightly cheeky and characterful little fellow with a red ribbon tied around his neck. He is definitely a spaniel of some description and believed to be a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Worked in wool in a chafing folky manner.
Inscribed verso ‘Amelia Hoomewood, Smarden, 1871.’ Amelia, was born Amelia Turk in 1846, she later married William Homewood Offen and they had seven children together. She would have been 25 when she created the woolwork. They lived at Wills Farm, near Smarden, a picturesque village in Kent, England.
There is also a later inscription verso ‘Mary Anne Homewood, 1904’, Mary Anne was the third daughter of the artist and 1904 was the date of Amelia’s death so this must have been inscribed the year Mary Anne inherited the piece from her mother.
Framed and glazed in its original parcel gilt and painted moulded frame.
The woolwork appears to be in very good vintage condition, the colours are still vibrant and there doesn’t appear to be any signs of damage. The frame is also in good vintage condition with some minor wear commensurate with age.
