Item Description

Antique Victorian pair Gothic Revival mythological griffins lions candlestick table lamps in gilt bronze, 1880`s ca, English.

This pair of antique lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has the following new components: lamp holder with a cream card cover, gold silk cable, black cord switch, black plug (UK Plug up to 250V) & clip on silk lampshade. Lightbulbs included. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a very fine & sculptural pair of antique 19th Century candlesticks of Gothic Revival design made in England around the 1880`s converted into lamps. The Neo-Gothic style is an architectural & decorative style born in the middle of the 18th Century in England. The arrival of Romanticism in Art & Literature at this time, strongly influenced the public`s enthusiasm for the Middle Ages, Medieval Arts and the new aesthetic quality known as the “Picturesque”. This antique lamps have several design features of the period: the mythological griffins or winged lions, Neoclassical decorative themes, elegant proportions and good weight.

The Griffin is a mythological creature probably originated in Egypt, with the body, hind legs, and tail of a lion and the wings, front talons, and head of an eagle. In this Victorian lamps though the heads are of lions. As they can fly with superhuman strength, they are considered a symbol of power, wealth, courage, and prestige.

The sculptural form, theme & delicate size make these lamps well proportioned for a shelf, bedside, chest or mantelpiece. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.

The design of each candlestick is luxurious & full of exquisite details, each of them individually made & cast in bronze, resulting in subtle variations in design and great movement.

Both figures are very stable as of heavy weight.

The design composition of each lamp consists of a gold gilt fine quality cast polished bronze base depicting a mythological griffin with a lion face, sitting on a rectangular plinth with a chamfered border. The wings elongate towards the top at either side. Above the head a circular crown shape central support with a series of fluted segments become the column of the lamp leading to the sconce decorated with Neoclasical motifs and drip pan. On top sits a new lamp holder covered by a new cream card candle tube. Neoclassical decorative motifs are also present around the body of the griffin, such as beaded garlands, creating various textures and depth.

The bases have new black felt underneath to protect the furniture below.

Both lamps are finished with new clip-on black silk lampshade lined metallic gold. This complements the tones of the base.
These lampshades are included in the price.

Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with new LED dimmable Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 40 Watts. These are included in the price.

These antique lamps are in very good condition for their age. The antique patina has been preserved on the metal. The frames are sound with no damages, missing or broken parts. There are minor superficial marks & rubbing, in line with age & use. The lampshades are new and in very good condition.

GOTHIC REVIVAL STYLE HISTORY IN ENGLAND

The Gothic Revival or Neo-Gothic style was an architectural & decorative style born in the middle of the 18th Century in England. The arrival of Romanticism in Art & Literature at this time strongly influenced the public`s enthusiasm for the Middle Ages, Medieval Arts and the new aesthetic quality known as the “Picturesque”. Walter Scott published historical novels. Victor Hugo’s famous novel of Notre Dame of Paris (1831) featured the hunchback’s story in the Parisian Gothic cathedral.

By the 1850`s Gothic Revival became the most popular architectural style in the West, peaking around the 1870`s, and falling out of fashion towards the end of the XIX Century. The London Parliament (1840-1860) by architects Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin, and the Saint Pancras Station`s Midland Hotel (1868-1877) by architect George Gilbert Scott are famous examples of the style.
